What makes a great web site? |
|
The answer to this question will vary
widely from business to business. Over the years, I have developed some personal
observations that may help you to answer that question about your web site. At it's core,
a web site has a few basic purposes. First and foremost is to present information about
your business in a clear, concise and logical manner. Another objective should be to
establish your brand through the prominent use of a well designed logo and color scheme,
which should remain consistent throughout the site. Ultimately, you want to leave a
lasting impression on your web site's visitors whereby any time a past visitor sees your
chosen color scheme or anything that remotely resembles your logo, it immediately brings
your brand, and thus your business, to mind. |

Now, lets talk
about what makes a not so great web site: |
|
In this day
and age, time is a precious commodity for most people and businesses. With that in mind,
there are a few things that should be avoided when designing an effective web site. One
pet peeve of mine is the use of a Flash based introduction or presentation. I don't
generally have the time, nor the desire, to view a fancy presentation upon arrival to your
site. A "skip intro" link does not help, as you have already irritated me from
the start - what a great first impression! Flash presentations and movies have their
place, but the viewer should always be given the choice to initiate viewing and not be
forced or expected to view it upon arrival to your site. Another thing that irritates me
to no end is audio in a web page. I visit a web site to obtain meaningful information, not
to hear your theme song or latest promotional jingle. I also work late on many nights and
do not appreciate unexpected audio blaring through my speakers waking the rest of the
house. Again, audio is fine if the visitor is given the choice to initiate it. Otherwise,
it's an unwelcome intrusion. |
|
I have also
seen web sites that are designed entirely using Flash which force the user to utilize only
the navigation links built into the site. This seems all well and good until one considers
that most people are creatures of habit and will automatically hit their browser's back
button to return to the last page they viewed. On these sites, this usually results in the
user being taken away from your site and back to the search page from which they found you
in the first place where, having been involuntarily tossed off your site, they will likely
not return and opt to visit one of your competitors instead. Not the intended result,
indeed. |
